Mary “Ching” Walters’ artistic journey began on a farm just north of Memphis in Raleigh, Tennessee.
Early on, she captured scenes from her rural surroundings and frequent trips to the Gulf Coast, developing a deep connection to nature and the coast. In 1956, she accepted her first art commission, launching a career that would span decades.
Ching is renowned for her large watercolors and acrylics, which often depict natural subjects with a fresh, uncluttered perspective. Her talents also extended to designing postage stamps for over 30 foreign countries and contributing to greeting cards, children’s books, and various products.
Her artistry is also reflected in public works, including three bronze designs installed on the Biloxi Bay Bridge and a ceramic mural in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Ching’s love for the Gulf Coast is evident in both her life and work. After living in Italy for five years, she returned to her true home along the coast, settling in Loxley, Alabama, where she continues to create in a small studio.
Her work can be found in galleries across the region, including Pink Pelican Art Gallery, Dauphin Island Heritage & Arts, Gallery By The Bay, and Innova Arts. Ching’s art offers a fresh view of the natural world, deeply connected to the Gulf Coast she holds dear.
